Scoria
The rock scoria is much more often called lava rock, but lava rock is not a correct petrological term. The name lava stone is predominant in garden centers and in trade. Scoria is in fact a basaltic rock which is very porous and has many holes. The colors generally range from red and brown to black. The rock is formed when gas-rich lava solidifies on the surface. It consists largely of obsidian (volcanic glass) and volcanic ash, which is partly responsible for the erratic mass. This Scoria from the Eifel is full of green pyroxene crystals.
