Spirula spirula

The squid Spirula spirula has of course already been mentioned above because it is the only species of this family that is sometimes found in collections. The shell of the squid is internal and has the function of keeping the animal afloat with its head down in the water. The species has a luminescent organ on the back of the body and is able to change color. It is a carnivore that hunts crabs, lobsters and planktonic animals. Spirula spirula occurs at a depth of 2000 meters and when the animal is dead the empty shell rises to the surface, so that it can be found on the beach.
