Although these shells resemble oysters and are therefore also called spiny oysters, they are not oysters. The shells are more closely related to the scallops. Overgrowth of other organisms on the shell and between the spines often provides good camouflage. There is great variation in shape and color, which makes identification more difficult. In all, there are just over 2 dozen species alive today.
