Sessilia – Barnacles
Few people know that barnacles are actually small crustaceans stuck to the substrate in a protective shell. The great thing about these houses is that they adapt to the substrate. For that reason, identification is not done on the basis of the shape of the houses, since this differs per individual. But it looks at the number of plates and some other characteristics. Often identifying work that requires a lot of literature is a specialist who knows what the differences are, so this is virtually impossible for amateur collectors. These fringe crayfish, as the animals are also called, have long catching arms with which they reach out every now and then to collect food particles. There are a lot of species and some of them only occur on a few types of substrate. For example, this can also concern a living organism such as a whale.
