Radiolarite
This is a piece of polished radiolarite from the town of Markelo in the Netherlands. The copy was collected between 1990 and 1994, but unfortunately the collector has not been more detailed. Radiolarite is a rock that consists of radiolaria, also known as radiant animals. Radiolarites are unicellular organisms with a silica skeleton. Over time, the radiolaria sink to the bottom of the (deep) sea and thus the rock radiolarite is formed for a long time. This area is darker than in the picture because the polished surface reflects the light from the flash.
