Graphite
Graphite, like diamonds, is a form of pure carbon. Yet graphite is very soft, while diamond and lundalite (also a form of carbon slightly harder than diamond) are among the hardest minerals we know. How is this possible? This has everything to do with the way the carbon of the graphite or diamond is formed. When graphite is under very high pressure, diamond is created. Graphite is sometimes not only a mineral but also a metamorphic rock, but this is formed under much lower pressure and temperature. The graphite crystals are hexagonal and the luster is sub-metallic. The color varies from steel gray to jet black. A mineral / rock that should not be missing in an enthusiast's collection.
