Diplodocus bot
These pieces of dinobone come from the well-known Morrison formation in Howe Range in Wyoming, USA. And stems from the Jurassic, making them about 150 million years old. I have been working in the prehistoric museum in Boxtel for over 2 years now, and here we are preparing and building such a Diplodocus. During preparation, however, a whole lot of sand and sometimes unfortunately also pieces of bone come off. There were also a lot of pieces of bone between the sand beforehand. This is due to the fact that it has already become very weathered in Wyoming itself, and in addition the skeleton has been in storage for another 20 years. Which is also not conducive to the condition of the skeleton.
All that sand and grit that is released after the preparation is put in buckets and these are put outside so that the large pieces fall apart further due to the influences of the weather. After a while we start sifting the sand. This sieving is done in different grain sizes and each grain size must be examined separately under the microscope when it is dry.
The purpose of all this? Microfossils, these are occasionally found in this "diplosediment". And I've taken on the task of sorting out this sediment for microfossils. The microfossils are returned to the museum for further research.
And the bone remnants, well not really worth the trouble to go and find them all, but I did it with the larger sand/gravel fractions. And I can/may now offer this for sale on my website.
And 50% of the proceeds go back to the Prehistoric Museum in Boxtel.
