Calcite
Calcite is a calcium carbonate with the chemical formula CaCo3. It is a pseudomorph of vaterite and of aragonite. It is also one of the most common minerals in our Earth's crust. The mineral belongs to the trigonal crystal system and has a glassy luster, the hardness is by definition 3. Some pieces of calcite are UV active. The fracture is brittle or shell-shaped, but the cleavage is perfect. The mineral calcite has a very old name. It was given by Gaius Plinus Secondus or Plinus the Elder, in 79 thanks to its resemblance to lime, which in Latin means Calx. Calcite has many forms and synonyms such as dog tooth calcite, calcite or Icelandic spar.
