The belemnites are an extinct group of squid. of the animal usually only the cylindrical rostum is preserved. (This is part of the internal skeleton). Belemnites did not have a shell and appear to be related to modern cuttlefish. The largest species Megatheutis gigantea could reach a length of about 46 cm.
