Opal is a mineral that has a lot in common with quartz chemically. There are many varieties of opal, most of which are amorphous with a monotonous color. Think of blue, green, yellow and pink opal. There are exceptions, however, some opals have all kinds of colors that adapt when different light strikes, these are the more expensive opals. fire opal, welo opal and of course the Australian black & roar opal which have astronomical market value. The latter is certainly the case when there is a lot of red in the color play.
