Bauxite - Aluminium Ore
Bauxite is a sedimentary rock but also one of the most important aluminum ores. This is because it consists largely of aluminum oxide, but other metals can also be mixed in it. Bauxite owes its name to the location where it was first found in Les-Baux-de-Provance in France. It was discovered in 1821 by the French geologist Pierre Berthier. And in 1991 the mining of bauxite started at that location. Today, however, Greece is the only country in Europe with economically extractable bauxite. And in 1915 a large occurrence of bauxite was discovered in Suriname. This is one of the country's main sources of income to this day.
