Scoria
The rock scoria is much more often called lava rock, but lava rock is not a correct petrological term. The name lava rock is predominant in garden centers and in the trade. Scoria is in fact a basaltic rock which is very porous and has many holes. The colors generally range from red and brown to black. The rock is formed when gas-rich lava solidifies on the surface. It consists largely of obsidian (volcanic glass) and volcanic ash that contribute to the erratic mass.
