Potsh
Potsh is the term used in Australia for opal that does not contain any play of colour. It is often an opaque gray or black mass. However, when cutting black opal you need the black potsh on the stone. If the potsh is right on the color layer, the opal becomes darker and therefore more valuable. These are just loose bits of potsh with no color, in some cases a bit zant. They are ideal practice pieces for when you are just starting to cut opal.
