The Hambach quarry is located approximately 15 kilometers from Cologne. It is a lignite quarry which started operating in 1984. Today the depth of the quarry is about 400 meters. And the length of this quarry is now much more than 8500 hecktare. Today it is the second largest lignite quarry in the world! The quarry is especially rich in plant fossils from the Miocene and Pliocene. Pine cones, walnuts and a number of mammal species are also found.
