The arcidae are heavy, porcelain-like bivalves that live in all warm seas. There are a number of known species that occur in very deep waters. Some spin a byssus that serves as an anchor. The hinge bears several taxodontic teeth that can vary in number, even within a species. The black horny ligament is very useful for identification. There are a total of about 200 species of this family alive.
